| Our Pioneer Heritage, Vol. 12, p.206 It was no unusual sight to see her riding across the sagebrush flats of Teton Valley, drawn by her white horse, Queen, with Flossy, her small dog lying at her feet in the front of the buggy. She was healthy and seldom sick. When her grandson, Pierce Cheney, went on a mission in 1901 she was very sad, saying, she felt that she would not live to see him again. Such a statement seemed a little peculiar coming from her for she was so well and strong. However, what she said came true; she died in 1902, being sick only a few days. She was 78 years old and is buried in Victor Cemetery. -D.U.P. Files |

I noticed that you had a photo in your possession listed for Talitha Cumi GARLICK, the wife of Elam Cheney Sr. I was wondering if I could possibly get a copy of that photo? My gggrandfather Dr. Levi Cheney grew up with Elam in Nauvoo and even made the trip out to Utah. Elam and Levi were first cousins and almost the same age. Levi later came back to Independence and moved next door to Joseph Smith III. Dr. Levi Cheney wrote Elam and siblings (Mehitable Cheney McBride) many times in the late 1800s and seemed really interested in hearing from them. Most of the letters were returned undeliverable. Since reading the letters I have had great interest in Elam and family, sisters, brothers etc. Hense this is the reason I am writing you for a copy of the photo. Is a scan of the photo possible? Thank you so much. Travis Thompson The 1880 census lists her as divorced. This may have been to protect her husband from prosecution. SOURCE: "An Enduring Legacy" by Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, 1979, vol 2, pg 25: HISTORY: "An Enduring Legacy" by Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, 1979, vol 2, pg 25: "...The first attempt at forming a colony on Huntington Creek was in Nov 1877, when a group of settlers from Fairview answered the call. This company travelled through Spanish Fork and Soldier canyons and what two years later would be Price, Utah. Included were Elias and Jehu Cox, Benjamin and Heber Jones, Frederick Fenn, William H. Avery, Anthony Humbel, Elam Cheney, Charles H. Holingshead and Elam McBride. Four women, Sarah Jane Jones, Eliza J. Avery, Rilda McBride and Olive Humbel, were also in the company. They built dugouts on the north side of the creek and stayed in the valley that winter. In the spring the Avery ditch was dug to convey water to the Avery homestead and others. Crops were planted and watered once or twice, but the prospects of realizing a good harvest were so poor that by July the settlers had all left Huntington Creek to return to their former homes. In Nov several of the men and a few women returned, and in December the wife of Benjamin Jones gave birth to a daughter whom they named Celestial Castle- a fitting title for one born in such surroundings. William Avery had succeeded in building a log cabin, where a Christmas dance was held, with David Leonard, Sally Wimmer and David Cheney providing the music. The group numbered forty-two men and seven women, necessitating some planning. The men were finally given a number and divided into six groups, with one group dancing at a time. It is said that the women were extremely popular. A large piece of venison, potatoes, bread, butter, salt and pepper constituted the refreshments, which were prepared over a huge bonfire built in front of the cabin. Crops were planted along the north side of the creek in the spring, and the people realized a good harvest of potatoes, grain and sugar cane. After a molasses mill was brought in, a nutritious and delicious supplement was added to the food supply. Settlers kept arriving, swelling the population to 1,000 by 1900. Thus did Huntington grow and prosper, becoming a permanent settlement in Castle Valley..." Our Pioneer Heritage Volume 12 The Unpublished Story Baptized in the Mississippi by the Prophet Company E I, Talitha Garlik Avery Cheney, was born September 22, 1824, in Providence, Belford County, Pennsylvania. Father and Mother were Christians and were very zealous and firm in their faith. The Christians believed in baptism by immersion but that was all that was required of them. They thought they belonged to the true church of God. When I was 13 years of age my mother dreamed she saw two strange preachers and heard a voice say, "These are the true messengers of God, hear them and obey." I heard Mother tell Father of the dream the next morning. A week later two elders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to our neighborhood. Their names were John Wakefield and William Bolsley, and they preached the true gospel to us. As soon as my mother saw them she said they were the two men she had seen in her dream. She and my three sisters were soon baptized. Then arose the mob spirit and all was confusion. Our friends and neighbors turned against us. We stayed on there two more years; mobs and persecution prevailed. Father sold his large farm worth $5,000 for $500 and all his stock at a public auction and we started for Missouri in October. On reaching Illinois we were told that the saints had been driven out, so we followed them to Commerce, later called Nauvoo. We arrived there too late in the season to build a house and there was none to be had, so Father rented a blacksmith shop and we lived there. Father built a sod chimney in it and a clapboard door. During the winter we hauled logs from across the river on the ice and built us a two-room cabin. We moved into it in March. I was baptized April 7, 1840, by the Prophet Joseph Smith, in the Mississippi River. I worked in his home and knew his family well. In June 1842, the Prophet organized the Relief Society. I was a member because there were no other organizations for young girls at that time. Brother Joseph came to our meetings often and gave us good counsel. I heard the Prophet preach his last sermon just before he and his brother Hyrum were martyred by the mob. I was also there when their bodies were brought back to Nauvoo. It was the saddest sight I ever saw, to see two, so great and good men as ever lived, killed in cold blood by a mob. These were times long to be remembered. I was in Nauvoo when Sidney Rigdon came from the east after Brother Joseph and Hyrum were killed to take lead of the church. There were none of the Twelve Apostles at home but Brother Taylor and Brother Richards. Brother Taylor had been badly wounded so Sidney Rigdon thought he would have things his own way, but he was mistaken; he called a meeting and said the church was old enough to choose a guardian for itself, it had been fourteen years since it was organized. But Brother Brigham Young and the rest of the Apostles got there in time to be at the meeting. After Rigdon sat down Brother Brigham got up and said, "All who want Brother Rigdon to lead them can have him, but I tell you the Keys of the Kingdom are in the hands of the Twelve Apostles. They are the ones to lead this people." As soon as Brother Brigham got up to speak, I said to myself, "That is the man to take the lead of this people." He looked just like Brother Joseph and spoke like him, I said "Surely the mantle of the Prophet Joseph has fallen on Brother Brigham." I never had a doubt, I knew Brother Brigham was the man to fill the place of our beloved Prophet. I knew Joseph Smith was a true Prophet of God and was the mouthpiece of God to the people and that Brother Brigham was his lawful successor and a man of God. In the fall of 1844 I married a good young man, William Howard Avery. He had a farm four miles north of Montrose in a very beautiful valley, but in 1846 we had to sell our place and leave with the first company in March. My first child was born on Sugar Creek, my husband got a cabin and we stayed there for a month, then we caught up with the company at Mt. Pisgah and traveled with them to the Bluffs. It was here the battalion was chosen and went to California. My husband was called, but I felt that I could not bear to have him leave me alone, I feared I would never get to the Valley of the Mountains if he did not stay with me. Brother Brigham came to our house and told me if I would let him go everything would be all right and we would all get to the Valley safely, but I begged and pleaded and coaxed and he finally consented to stay with me. Read my story and you shall see what a mistake I made when I did not listen to, and trust in the Lord. In the spring of 1847 Brother Brigham with a band of pioneers started west to find a home for the Latter-day Saints somewhere west of the Rockies. After the company left, we crossed the Missouri River to the east side, there my husband built a house and fenced and planted a garden, then he and his brother went to Missouri to find work. We had been living for a year on what we had brought with us, so we had to stay to get a fresh supply before we could go on to the mountains. They left the first of July and found a good place to work. Charles Avery was hauling flour to Winter Quarters so I went down with him to where my husband was. In September my husband took very sick, we could not get the Elders, they were too far away. He got so bad we gave consent to have a doctor, but he could not save him, he died on the 13th of September in Lindon, Atcheson Co., Missouri. My son was then 18 months old. I was left alone among strangers, not one of my folks within five hundred miles, only my husband's youngest brother was with me. If I was ever left alone, I was then. I don't know what I would have done without my brother-in-law. My baby had taken sick the same day as his father. I would not give him any of the doctor's medicine. He was sick for two months but the Lord spared his life for a comfort to me. On the 15th of September my brother-in-law took me up to the Bluffs. I stayed with my mother until she started for the valley in 1852. I then stayed with my sister Susan, for she felt so bad to have us all go and she had to stay. John Wakefield (he might be the same person who brought the gospel to them first) thought he could get ready by another year, but he was disappointed, for another year he was no nearer ready than the year before. So in 1853 I started west with Brother Jacob Bigler's folks; we started the 10th of June, in Daniel Miller Company. We were on the road four months, the grasshoppers had destroyed all the crops. I went south to Springville as my mother, brother and three sisters were there. They lived in a fort because the Indians were so unfriendly. On February 13th, I married Elam Cheney and was sealed for time only. I had heard the law on celestial marriage taught and I had read the revelation on plural marriage and I believed it was from God, and that I should obey His law. I had not been sealed to my husband and I had but one child. Elam Cheney was a good Latter-day Saint and one month older than I, and he was willing to take me for time only. On January 18, 1855, Olive Mehitable was born. That year the grasshoppers took all the crops again which made bread very scarce. Mr. Cheney planted corn on the land after the grasshoppers left, and he raised enough corn for our bread. We did not have to do without. By saving we divided with those who had none, and the Lord blessed us and we did not suffer for bread. In March 1860, I moved to a ranch Mr. Cheney had bought. My oldest son was now 14 years old and could tend cattle and sheep. In March 1864 I moved with my family to Fairview to run a ranch there. Mr. Cheney wanted some of his family to raise grain and he thought William was old enough to tend a farm. A Sunday school was formed, and I taught the theology class. In 1866 the Indians killed some men and drove off stock; my son was wounded with two others while on picket line. Thomas Jones was killed and three weeks later we had to vacate Fairview and go to Mt. Pleasant. I was also a teacher in Relief Society and later chosen as secretary. In 1879 I was made president of the Primary Association. Three years later I resigned and moved to Castle Valley where I again taught the theology class. I served for 11 years, when I resigned all my offices and went with my daughter and her husband, Anthony Humble and family, and my own two sons to Idaho. I rode all the way in my buggy. When we reached the Big Mountain?Teton Pass?we had to wait about three weeks for the snow to melt. In June we started over the mountain and I walked all the way, 22 miles, because it was so steep no one could ride over it. I was then 69 years old. (End of autobiography.) |
