| Stated in record above, "p. 94, Appointed Bishop on North Pigeon, (Note: Hand written with name, apointed Bishop 7/19/1848)" Aaron Cheney Sr. and Mehitable Wells by Travis Scott Thompson, copyright 2001 Aaron Cheney Sr. was born the son of Benjamin Cheney and Eunice Hubbard of York Co., Maine, July 14, 1787 according to a Patriarchal blessing on record with the Mormon Church as well as several other sources commonly found today. "Patriarchal Blessing of Aaron Cheney Sr. (Mormon Pioneer) PATRIARCHAL BLESSING No. 157 Vol.9 P.149 May 5th A Blessing by John Smith, Patriarch, upon the head of Aaron Cheney son of Benjamin & Eunice, born July 14th 1787, Berwick, Maine _____ Aaron I lay my hands upon thy head & by the authority of the Holy Priesthood & in the name of Jesus Christ I seal a fathers blessing upon thee, thou art of the house of Jacob & a heir to the blessings which were sealed upon his sons & the priesthood which was sealed upon the sons of Joseph, for thou art of the blood of Ephraim, tis your privilege to receive the priesthood in fulness in due time & to come up to thy station thou must seek diligently for thou art appointed to be a counselor in the house of Israel & God shall give thee understanding in all difficult matters & thou shalt be able to counsel wisely & judge righteously, thou shalt be a president of a stake of Zion & thou shalt attend to all the duties & privileges of that office & thy name shall be respected among the saints because of thy wisdom; tis your privilege to preach the Gospel in any place that you desire to; tis thy lot to _____ thy fathers house clear back to Adam or to where they ____ in the Gospel & bring them up in the morning of the resurrection; thou shalt have an inheritance with thy brethren, a numerous posterity an honorable name among the saints forever; if your faith does not fail, you shall live till Zion is established in peace & not a dog to move his tongue against the saints, shall depart in peace 7 inherit eternal life; this is thy blessing sealed upon thee & thy posterity in common with thy companion, upon conditions of obedience, amen A. Carrington recorder" Aaron Sr.'s parents, Benjamin Cheney Sr. and Eunice Hubbard came from several very early and well known families of New England, arriving shortly after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Benjamin Cheney Sr. was a descendant of the famous Hannah Dustin / Duston family of which endless amounts of material have been written. Hannah Dustin / Duston was the first woman in the United States to have a statue erected in her honor, two statues and the family garrison currently stand in New England today. Aaron Cheney Sr.'s connection to Hannah Dustin / Duston would include the following ancestors. Hannah Webster Emerson married Thomas Dustin / Duston Hannah Dustin married Daniel Cheney II Daniel Cheney III married Sarah Littlefield Joseph Cheney (Rev. War. Veteran) married Dorcas Stewart Benjamin Cheney I (Rev. War. Veteran) married Eunice Hubbard Aaron Cheney Sr. married Mehitable Wells Eunice Hubbard was the daughter of Capt. John Heard Hubbard, a famous New England Indian fighter and Revolutionary War soldier. Aaron Sr.'s brother Hurd / Heard Cheney was undoubtedly named in his honor. Aaron Sr.'s father Benjamin Cheney Sr. had also fought in the American Revolution, and details of his service can be found in "Corporal Benjamin Cheney I" by John Schultze. There are several sources stating that Benjamin Cheney and Eunice Hubbard left Maine shortly after the birth of Aaron Sr. for the frontier of Northern Vermont such as the book: Elam Cheney, Aaron Cheney, Mehitable Wells; Their Ancestors and Some Descendants by Marvel R. Cheney 1967.(Mormon family History Library) "A Story of Benjamin and Eunice Cheney After They Left Maine. Just when Benjamin Cheney left York, Maine and went to settle at Granby, Vermont is unknown. In the 1790 Federal Census of Guildhall, Orange county (later Essex county), Vermont, Benjamin Cheney appears (1 - 2 - 2). Benjamin and wife and three small children, namely: Moses, eldest, Aaron and Sarah. Much research has been done on which route Benjamin and wife took to Vermont. First: may have been for them to return to Newbury, Mass., on the Merrimac River, where Benjamin's ancestors had lived for nearly a 100 years before going to York County, Maine. Therefore the sources of the Merrimac river would be well known to the Cheney families. The Merrimac river is fed by many lakes in the central part of New Hampshire and in this area the mountains and hills are quite low. The high mountains are to the North. If they went by water, we presume they traveled the Merrimac river until they came to a tributary of the Merrimac that reaches toward the Connecticut river and then by crossing a low hill they reached a contributary of the Connecticut and preceded down that tributary to the Connecticut river and up the Connecticut river to the region of Guildhall. At this time the greatest precentage of travel was still done by water. Either a flat boat (raft) or a dug out, hollowed out log canoe, was used with all the families possessions pilled on it. A flat boat would carry more then a dug out and could even had a cow on it. Second: they may have gone by ox sled (drawn by oxen) and when the heavy sled, loaded with probably a household chest, an iron kettle or two, seeds, axes and the children, would become mired in the mud in the swamps, Benjamin and his wife would then have aided the oxen in pulling it through. There was always a cow in any caravan and sometimes pigs and poultry. Hurd was the first of Benjamin's children to be born at Granby, Vermont. But that does not tell us when they arrived in Guildhall, Vermont. We know by the census that Granby was not inhabited in 1790. And it is very likely Benjamin had been up the Merrimac river at sometime before he and his family moved that way. Benjamin's grandfather, Daniel Cheney's residence at Newbury, Mass., when he was a youth. The 1800 Federal Census of Granby, Essex county, taken from Orange county which had been divided into several counties by now; gives Benjamin and Eunice Cheney with eight children. "Granby, Essex, Co., Vermont: Federal Census of 1800. Cheaney, Benjamin 2-2-0-1-0 males 3-1-0-1 females. BENJAMIN-6 CHENEY was baptized May 8, 1753, Wells, Maine. He is buried in Freedom, Cattaraugus county, New York. He is the son of Joseph-5 Cheney and Dorcus Stewart. Marriage, intentions 13 May 1783, married 16 June 1783 at Wells, Maine" Aaron Sr. grew up in northern Vermont and married Mehitable Wells on August 14, 1807 in Marshfield, Washington Co., Vermont. Mehitable was the daughter of Selah Wells and Mehitable Tuthill. Selah Wells was a soldier in the Revolutionary War in New York, he came to Marshfield, Vermont in 1798 from Amenia, New York and was also the first Deacon of the Congregational Church in Marshfield. Selah moved to Newberry, Vermont in 1836. Aaron Sr. and Mehitable resided in Marshfield, Washington Co., Vermont for a short period of time before moving to Freedom New York. They had many children, including several that died at birth or infancy. Shortly after the birth of their son Amasa F. a series of bad winters came to northern Vermont which drove many of the early families from the area. Benjamin Cheney Sr. and Aaron Sr. left Vermont as well during this time period. I will quote from the book Child?s Essex and Caledonia County Gazetteer, Vermont, 1764-1887, published 1887 which includes other interesting facts about the Cheney family. "?The Benjamin, Sr. and Eunice Cheney family in the 1810 federal census of Granby Essex county, Vermont: Cheany, Benjamin (1 male and 1 female over 45: 1 male between 10 and 16; 1 female between 10 and 16; 1 male under 10 years; 1 female under 10 years.) The children could be Ephraim age 12 and probably Anna age 14, Benjamin age 8 and Olive age 9. Where were Eunice and Martha that day? Married or just not at home. 4. Aaron 7- Cheney has a household of his own in 1810, with one male child under 10 who could be Amasa. 2. Moses Cheney is also married to Jemima Streeter whose birth is reported to be in two different places; Winsor Co., Vermont. ** (I feel it should be Hartford, Winsor Co., Vermont. mrc.) And P.S. says Jemima was married at Bridgewater, Vermont. Moses and Jemima Cheney are Parker Sage?s ancestors. Aaron Cheney married Mehitabel Wells, of Marshfield, Washington county, Vermont. Some have it Mansfield. Mansfield and Marshfield lay side by side on the 1790 map. **See Wells Genealogy. Mehitabel Wells had a brother, John, who lived at Newbury, Orange Co., Vermont, on the Connecticut river. Did Mehitabel meet Aaron while visiting her brother at Newbury, Vermont? It appears as though Moses and Aaron had been rafting or boating up and down the Connecticut river and met their wives at towns they had stopped at. Between 1810 and 1820, Benjamin Cheney, sons and daughters moved from Granby, Vermont." Other interesting details of the Cheney migration can be found in Florence Allen Cheney?s family records: "Benjamin Cheney moved from Granby, Vermont to New York, in 1813. In 1813 all of the inhabitants of Granby moved out; the snow was too deep, the weather too severally cold and the wolves were very dangerous, so they all left the town, next spring 3 families went back but not Benjamin Cheney. At this time presumable he moved with his family to Freedom, Cattaraugus county, New York.? (Source: Appendix to the Cheney Genealogy published 1902: Edgar O. Cheney of Buffalo, New York, gives the following outline----?My great-grandfather, name unknown, removed from Vermont to Freedom, Cattaraugus Co., N.Y. with children, Moses, Hurd, Aaron and two daughters." Aaron Sr. and Mehitable's children include Aaron Jr., Elam (Mormon Pioneer), Olive Mehitable (Mormon Pioneer), Amasa F. (Mormon Pioneer, left the Mormon faith after an illness caused him to stop in Iowa), Ezekiel Wells (Mormon Pioneer) and Orrin Cheney. Aaron and Mehitable Wells Cheney were among the early members of the Mormon faith as were many of their extended families. After settling in Cattaraugus Co., New York they joined the Church and migrated to Kirkland, Ohio as so many early Mormons did. About this time it seems Aaron's father Benjamin and mother Eunice have passed away and are buried at the Freedom English Cemetery in Freedom, Cattaraugus New York. Some descendants claim that Benjamin Sr. was baptized into the Mormon Church by Aaron Sr. but this would seem almost impossible. A photo of what is thought to be the family plot is given by John Schultze a descendant of Benjamin Cheney Jr. The original graves were taken from the cemetery many years ago. See platmap at www.hannahdustin.com A plat map of the Freedom English Cemetery is also included submitted by Lyman Lowery of New York, a descendant of Aaron Sr.'s sister Anne Cheney Runnels. Aaron Lincon Cheney writes of Aaron Sr. and Mehitable 's migration to Kirkland, Ohio in his book, "The History of Elam Cheney , my Grandfather" by Aaron Lincon Cheney of Utah: "Elam?s father and mother were both religiously inclined and were faithful members of the Methodist Church until they were visited by the Prophet Joseph Smith and Orson Pratt who taught them the gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They were baptized members of this church in the year 1831. In 1835 they moved to Kirtland, Ohio, where their ten-year-old son, Elam, was baptized in the Shegran River by Elder Deamascus Carter. They purchased a farm located about two miles southeast of where the Kirtland Temple was built."In the late 1830s many in the Mormon Church were being driven from the Kirkland area, and Aaron Sr. and Mehitable moved this time to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois with several of Aaron's brothers including my great great great grandfather Ephraim Cheney and his family also of Kirkland, Ohio. While in route to Nauvoo, Aaron Sr. and Mehitable were visited by the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. Again I quote from the book: "The History of Elam Cheney, my Grandfather" by Aaron Lincon Cheney of Utah: "The Cheney family left Kirtland in July 1838 in the company known as Kirtland Camp. They intended to join the Saints at Nauvoo, but, owing to sickness, were not able to continue the journey. They stopped temporarily at Decatur, Macon Co., Illinois. While detained at this place, they were to work and fence a piece of ground, build a small house, raise a crop. It was while they were living at Decatur, that Joseph, the Prophet, started on his memorable trip to Washington for the purpose of laying the grievances of the saints before the President of the United States. As Joseph was passing through Decatur, he stopped and spent the night at the Cheney home. Elam, who was 14 at this time, was very much impressed by the conversation of the Prophet. As soon afterward, as they could, the Cheney Family continued their journey to Nauvoo. While at Nauvoo, Elam played in a game of baseball with Joseph Smith." Aaron Sr. and Mehitable settled in Nauvoo on 40 acres located on block 28 next door to Ephraim Cheney who had purchased 640 acres on block 32. Aaron's brother Benjamin Cheney Jr. and wife Nancy Snow stayed behind in Kirkland, Ohio and they later moved to Ft. Dodge, Iowa after many in the Church members were being forced out of the Kirkland area. Aaron Sr. and Ephraim worked and lived together for several years and were very close as Nauvoo grew to be one of the largest cities in the country. My great great grandfather Dr. Levi Cheney would write of the "good times" their families shared while living in Nauvoo in his letters to Aaron's son Elam and daughter Olive Mehitable. Dr. Levi Cheney was about the same age as Aaron's children, they shared a lot of their teenage years growing up together. Several of the Cheney men helped in the building of the Nauvoo Temple including the sons of Aaron and Ephraim. I quote from the book : "The History of Elam Cheney , my Grandfather" by Aaron Lincon Cheney of Utah: "Elam was present when the cornerstone of the Nauvoo Temple was laid, April 6, 1841. While the temple was being built the young men were given an opportunity to work out their tithing by working on the temple, so Elam worked every tenth day and sometimes oftener on the temple." On June 27, 1844 the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. and his brother Hyrum were murder in the Carthage, Illinois jail. This would be the beginning of the end of the Mormons in Nauvoo as they searched for a new leader. A strong debate occurred among the Mormons as to who would now lead the Church. Many accepted that Brigham Young should be the new leader while others would only accept the son of the Mormon Prophet, Joseph Smith III. Joseph Smith III, being a young boy of 14 was thought by many to be incapable of such a task. Joseph Smith III would later start the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a group that many of Aaron Sr's extended family would choose to follow. Aaron Sr's family was unreceptive to this idea and left Nauvoo with the famous Mormon wagon trains. They prepared to leave Nauvoo for Salt Lake under the leadership of Brigham Young. Before they left the mobs had become too much to live with in Nauvoo as many were tarred and feather, or even worst they were killed. Its is said that the land on which Aaron Sr. and brother Ephraim's property lay, was an exceptional hard place to live as it was close to the shore of the Mississippi river. Many of the mobs would cross the river and terrorize the the land owners close to the shore and quickly escape to the other side of the river. Aaron Lincon Cheney writes of the mob violence in his book "The History of Elam Cheney , my Grandfather" : "As mob violence increased and the saints were driven from their homes in Nauvoo, Brother Cheney shared all the hardships endured by the saints. He was at Nauvoo, and saw the Prophet leave for Carthage and heard him make the remark, ?I am going like a lamb to the slaughter.?He was at the meeting in Nauvoo, when Governor Boggs was present, while the tragedy was being enacted at Carthage, and he was among those who left Nauvoo to accompany the bodies of the Prophet, and his brother Hyrum, back to the city. He was present at the funeral of the martyred brothers. He also attended the meeting when President Young took the stand and made manifest to the people that he was rightful successor of the Prophet Joseph." Missouri Governor Boggs was the authority that gave the famous extermination order which led to the murder and wounding of many Mormons at Haun's Mill, Missouri by the state militia. James McBride (husband of Olive Mehitable Cheney) the son in law of Aaron Sr. and Mehitable, was present at the Haun's Mill settlement during the massacre. He would later write his family biography and tell the chilling events that took place that day. James was a young boy with his father, Revolutionary War veteran Thomas McBride who was killed with his own rifle and badly cut with a corn knive. My great great grandfather Dr. Levi Cheney would mention this in letters to Olive Mehitable Cheney (McBride) the daughter of Aaron Sr. and Mehitable. James and Olive Mehitable Cheney (McBride) would later care for Aaron Sr.'s wife Mehitable after his death in Ogden, Weber Co., Utah. The children of Aaron Sr. and Mehitable including Elam, Ezekiel Wells and Olive Mehitable also settled in the Salt Lake while Aaron Jr., and Amasa F. stopped in Iowa. Dr. Levi Cheney my great great grandfather would also travel to Salt Lake and to California during the 1849 gold rush. His father Ephraim and wife Harriet were unwilling to follow Brigham Young and remained faithful to the Mormon Prophet's son Joseph Smith III who established the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lamona Iowa and Independence Mo. Ephraim his father settled north of Nauvoo in Kent, Stephenson Co., Illinois and died while visiting his son Lewis Cheney in Holden Johnson Co., Missouri. Dr. Levi Cheney later moved to Independence in the 1880s and lived next door to Joseph Smith III on Short St. where his home is still in the family today. This home has been continuously occupied by the Cheney / Thompson family since the 1880s and is owned by my great uncle today. Dr. Cheney's descendants including my grandfather George Wallace Thompson (a grandson) who grew up with the family of RLDS President Joseph Smith III, son of the Mormon Prophet. In the 1990s published many articles on the Cheney / Thompson family experiences as neighbors of the Smiths. Aaron Sr. died September 18, 1862, Grantsville, Tooele Co., Utah Green River Prect. and was buried at the Ogden City Cemetery, Weber Co., Utah. In 2000 I and my wife Rebecca tried to locate the grave of Aaron Sr., but unfortunately a headstone can no longer be found. Mehitable died several years later while in the care of her daughter Olive Mehitable Cheney (McBride). Aaron Sr. and Mehitable's descendants are many, and spread throughout the United States primarily in Utah, Idaho, California, Arizona, Iowa and Illinois. The information in this genealogical document was obtained at Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1916 by Martin Franklin Sanders, son of Moses Martin Sanders, Jr., and Elizabeth Ellen Cheney, and is a carbon-copy typescript. The family record begins with John Cheney (n.d.-1666) who was born in England. In 1635, he is described in a list of the first members of the Roxbury, Massachusetts, Congregational church. John and his wife, Martha, had brought four children--Mary, Martha, John, and Daniel to America. Aaron Cheney, descended from the son, Daniel, was born in Granby, Vermont, about 1790. Did Mehitabel meet Aaron while visiti |
