| CENSUS: 1820 United States Federal Census, Ischua, Cattaraugus, New York 1830 United States Federal Census, Freedom, Cattaraugus, New York 1835 New York State Census, Freedom, Cattaraugus, New York 1840 United States Federal Census, Macon Co., Illinois 1850 United States Federal Census, Erin, Stephenson Co., Illinois 1860 United States Federal Census, Glenwood Village Township, Mills Co., Iowa This is an old family history of Hurd Cheney passed down through the Higley family. The pictures were not included in the document but added by myself for greater interest. The author of the biography of Hurd is unknown and to my understanding is quite old. Hurd Cheney is the uncle of Dr. Levi Cheney and lived very close for many years. Levi inquired of his cousins (children of Hurd) many times in letters written to Olive Cheney McBride. This biography and all photos were given to this site by Ken Kothe. Although I received my copies of the letters of Dr. Levi Cheney from the Faunce family, copies were also found in Ken Kothe's family record. HURD CHENEY Born 1791-Died on the plains 1861 Hurd Cheney was born 16 September 1791, the first child born in the town of Granby, Essex Co. Vermont. The fifth child of Benjamin and Eunice Hubbard Cheney. It is recorded that Hurd Cheney bought land in Granby from his brother Aaron about 1812. Hurd moved to Freedom, Cattaraugus, New York, where other members of the Cheney family had moved. He married Susanna Golf, who we are told was born in Madison County, New York. They had four children, Mary Lee (Marier) born about 1818, Mariah born about 1820, Malinda born 29 November 1822 at Freedom, Cattaraugus, New York, Milton born born 8 January 1825 at Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York. Susanna either died when Milton was born or soon afterwards. Malinda, Hurd's daughter said in those days it was important for the boys to go to school, and not the girls, and her family was having a hard time so she received very little schooling. She and her sister took turns going to school, one one day and the other the next day. They had one dress between them, which was washed and ironed at night for the next day. The other children called them the girls that had dresses alike, not realizing they only had one dress. The Cheneys were visited by the Prophet Joseph Smith and Orson Pratt. They were baptized members of the Church in the year 1831. About 1835 some disciples of Mormonism held a series of meetings in various homes and barns that created much excitement. When they left for Ohio, they were followed by ten or fifteen families, who had become converts. However, later some of them renounced the faith and returned to Freedom. The Cheneys moved with them. Also his brother Aaron Cheney and family. They more than likely traveled together, to Kirkland Ohio. Hurd's daughter Malinda was married to Clark Higley 17 September 1837 by Brigham Young in Kirkland, Ohio. Later in 1837 Hurd's family left Kirkland and settled in Illinois. Again we find that Hurd was a widower, as he was married to Hannah in the 1850 census of Erin, Stephenson County, Illinois. Hurd is listed here at age 58., his wife Hannah age 61 and his son Malvin 18. In comparing family records, we found that Hurd Cheney's family lived near the Higleys from Kirkland to their move West. In 1852 Hurd and some of his family settled in Glenwood Mill County, Iowa. Here they bought farms. In the census taken 2 July 1860 Hurd appears age 68, with wife Hannah age 70. Hannah signed with Hurd on land sold late 1860 or early 1861 as they planned their trek West to the Salt Lake Valley where their hearts had long been centered. As Hurd was getting ready in the spring of 1861 to leave Glenwood, his wife Hannah decided to stay with members of her family rather than to try travelling at that time. Hurd who was 69 1/2 years old, travelled with his daughter Malinda Cheney Higley age 39 1/2, her husband Clark Higley age 48 1/2, and five of their children, Freeman, nearly eighteen, George 16, Jane 18, Daniel 10 1/2, Harriet 8, and Clark's mother Lucretia Higley age 79 1/2. They endured all the hardships of the pioneers. Daniel helped his mother drive a team of horses hitched to a two seated buggy or whitetop in which rode his grandparents, Lucretia Higley, Hurd Cheney and little sister Harriet. Hurd was a shoemaker by trade and was bringing a load of shoes to Utah. NOTE: I don't know who wrote this but Melvin and Mansell were not twins. Not sure where they got that idea and Melvina's b.d. is wrong also. (this note at the bottom was present when this biography was given to me, T.T) CHAPTER ON THE TOWN OF FREEDOM THE MORMONS. In concluding these historical sketches of the churches in the town of Freedom, it may be proper to add in the same connection some facts in regard to the Mormon excitement of 1835, and the success attending the labors of the Mormon leaders in their efforts to obtain proselytes. At the time mentioned, the quiet precincts of Fish Lake neighborhood were invaded by Joe Smith, Sidney Rigdon, John Gould, and Parley Pratt. They made their head-quarters at Rufus Metcalf's and Dr. Warren Cowdery's. Meetings were held, daily and nightly, in barns and dwelling-houses, and a prodigious excitement pervaded the minds of many people in that immediate vicinity. Among those residents who were conspicuous as believers in the humbug, were Dr. Cowdery, Rufus Metcalf, Nehemiah Sparks, Orrin Cheney, Hurd Cheney, Capt. Heman Hyde, Heman T. Hyde and wife, and Barber Lawson. As a result, 30 men and women were induced to join the Mormons, and emigrated with them to Kirtland, Ohio. Some came back and renounced their faith in Mormonism, while others continued with them to the end of their lives. FROM: Moore Family History & Genealogy, Assembled by Gaylen Moore Hannah Crannell Born 1789, died 1868. Hannah married Elam Sperry. Hannah and Elam were the parents of Lovina. After Elam died, Hannah remarried, this time to a Mormon named Hurd Cheney. Hannah was his 4th wife (via serial monogamy, not polygamy). (Hurd's daughter by a previous marriage married Brigham Young.) Hurd (a shoemaker, by trade) and Hannah moved to Mills Co., Iowa. and in l86l he, his daughter and son-in-law and their kids headed for for Salt Lake City. Hurd died on the trail in Wyoming and is buried there. - History of Cattaraugus Co. New York, Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of its Prominent Men and Pioneers. Philadelphia: L.H.
