FROM THE BOOK: Orson Pratt's Journal concerning Mormon Baptisms April 2nd. Preached at Fish Lake schoolhouse upon the 4th Chapter of Ephesians and read the Articles and Covenants and laws, and the 48th chapter of the Book of Commandments. After meeting there were four baptized, viz.: Joseph Fountain, Caroline Fountain, Amasa Cheney and Olive Cheney. In the evening we held a confirmation meeting and confirmed those mentioned above. April 3rd. We baptized and confirmed two, viz.: Hannah Cheney and Polly Lawson. In the evening preached at Centreville upon the scattering and gathering of Israel, the 29th and 49th chapters of Isaiah, the two sticks and more miracles and revelations at their gathering. April 4th. We visited the people from house to house and conversed with them. April 5th. We baptized and confirmed two, viz.: Aaron Cheney and Lucy Sparkes. In the evening held a meeting and blessed the little children. FROM THE BOOK: The Utah Genealogy and History, April 1937 Volume XXVIII, No. 2, page 94. History of Orson Pratt (written by himself) Year 1834, April 2nd, Preached at Fish Lake School House after meeting there were four baptized. Amasa Cheney, Olive Cheney, ________,__________. In the evening we held a confirmation meeting and confirmed those mentioned above. April 3rd baptized Hannah Cheney, April 5t baptized and confirmed Aaron Cheney, April 6th baptized Orson Cheney. Cheney Sr. (1809-1870) Amasa F. Cheney Sr. was born on 9 Dec 1809 to Aaron Cheney Sr. and Mehitable Wells in Mansfield, Washington County, Vermont. He married Hannah Hadley in Chine, Genesse County, New York on 20 Apr 1827. Hannah was the daughter of Ithamar Hadley and Sarah Hinkerson. Orson Pratts personal history indicated that he preached at the Fish Lake School House on 2 Apr 1834. He reports that after the meeting four people were baptized and confirmed as members of the Mormon church. Amasa Cheney Sr. and his sister Olive Mehitable Cheney were included in this group. Pratt indicates that Amasas wife Hannah Hadley Cheney was baptized on 3 Apr 1834. Orrin Cheney was baptized on 5 Apr l831 Aaron Cheney Jr. was baptized on 6 Apr 1834. They joined the exodus of the church from Nauvoo in 1846. Amasa Sr. his wife Hannah Hadley continued on the Mormon trail until August 1846 when they reached the camp at Richmonds Point (near the present city of Bloomfield, Davis County, Iowa and approximately 80 miles south of Millersburg, Iowa County, Iowa) They left the Mormon trail at that point to join his brother Aaron Jr. who had opened a hotel at the stage coach stop at Millersburg, Iowa County, Iowa in 1845. Illness of several of Amasa's children and his fathers one-.year stop in Decatur, Illinois in 1838 apparently played a major role in their decision to stop over in Millersburg. Amasa settled three miles southeast of Millersburg on a farm and remained there until his death. Amasa Sr. was one of the first two Christian Church (now known as the Disciples of Christ) preachers in Iowa County Iowa. Amasa Sr., then age 50, and his brother Aaron Jr. donated lumber to build the first Christian Church in the county. They went 20 miles to Marengo, the Iowa county seat to obtain permission to build the church. Permission was granted on l4 Mar 1860. An article by Charles Cheney, a son of Amasa Jr. reported in the North English Record that Amasa Cheney, Sr. preached the first sermon ever delivered in the Millersburg Christian church from the Mormon Bible.
